Legislative Update

The numbers continue to rise as we get closer to the end of the 2012 legislative year. Currently, there are 189 introductions and 73 enactments. The 2010 Amendments to UCC Article 9 lead all acts with 28 introductions and 20 enactments, bringing its total number of enactments to 30. The 2012 legislative year will officially "close" on September 30, 2012.

New Committees

At its annual meeting in Nashville, the Executive Committee authorized the appointment of five new drafting and two new study committees. The new drafting committees are: Drafting Committee on Model Act on Appointment and Powers of Real Estate Receivers; Drafting Committee on Series of Unincorporated Business Entities; Drafting Committee on Amendments to the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act; Drafting Committee on Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets; and Joint Drafting Committee with the Uniform Law Conference of Canada on Interjurisdictional Recognition of Advance Planning Documents. The new study committees are: Study Committee on Model Veterans’ Court Act; and Study Committee on Trust Protectors. For information on these or any other drafting or study committees, please call the Chicago office.

Changes in Chicago

We are pleased to announce a new addition to the Chicago staff: Ben Orzeske has recently joined the ULC as Legislative Counsel. Ben is a graduate of DePaul University College of Law, and also was a senior law clerk with the ULC while a student, so is very familiar with the ULC. You can reach Ben at 312-450-6621, or by email at

Ben fills the Legislative Counsel position left vacant with the departure of Kieran Marion in the spring. Kieran left the ULC to accept a position as Vice President, Governmental Affairs with the Michigan Credit Union League, which has offices in Lansing, Michigan. We wish Kieran all the best as he begins this new chapter in his professional career.

ULC Baby!

The ULC family has grown again! Leang Sou, ULC Membership and Meetings Manager, recently had a baby girl. Josephine was born on July 23 and weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces. Both mother and baby (and father Joe) are doing fine. Leang will be on maternity leave until September 18. She will work part-time Tuesdays and Thursdays from the office September 18 through October 26, and will return to work full-time on October 29. Congratulations Leang!
